Shawn Coutts became a member of IUOE in 1998 as a result of an invitation from his cousin who was a Business Agent with the Union at the time. Shawn immediately accepted the invitation and paid his fee. That same year he was dispatched to his first job at J&N Construction in Joffre, AB as a Skidsteer Operator.
Shawn’s very first job was in 1980 for the Town of Stony Plain, cutting grass and working on Ice Operations in the arena.
Every day, Shawn always performs his job to the best of his ability. The highlights of Shawn’s day is his focus on safety and communication. These are the skills that have made Shawn successful in his career.
Shawn’s best job was working at Kearl Lake from 2010 to 2015. Shawn originally was dispatched as a Utility Operator. Shawn excelled at his job and moved up in the ranks from Foreman and then to General Foreman. While working in these positions, Shawn learned a lot about his scope of work while operating equipment and management.
It was this same job that Shawn worked with Ray Goodwin as his Construction Manager and an Operating Engineer. Shawn attributes Ray to being the person who showed him how to engage with his craft and with others. Ray was also a big part of Shawn’s decision in becoming a General Foreman.
Shawn’s parents have always been a huge influence on his life, supporting him no matter what. Both Shawn’s uncle and cousin, who are also members of IUOE have also played a special role in influencing Shawn. Shawn credits his wife, children and grandchildren for inspiring him.
Shawn believes safety is necessary and should be followed 100% of the time. Everyone wants to go home safely at the end of every day.
