Alberta Government Announces Workplace Legislation Review
Posted on March 14, 2017
This week the Provincial government announced that Alberta’s Employment Standards Code and Labour Relations Code will be looked at extensively. These codes cover issues such as work hours, overtime, union-management relationships and many other issues.
This is an important step for Alberta since this legislation has not been thoroughly updated in nearly 30 years. As it stands now, Alberta has one of the toughest labour laws in Canada, with a strong slant towards the employer. We are supportive of this government’s review of the codes and are hopeful that the result will ensure a more level playing field for unions.
A consultation period is currently in effect until April 18, 2017. The Provincial government is encouraging Albertans to give their opinion on this matter by filling out an online survey or sending a letter. The Building Trades of Alberta and Local 955 will continue to be engaged in this process with the government and will be sharing more information with you as it becomes available.
