COVID Virus Prevention

IUOE Local 955 Apprenticeship and Education follows strict COVID-19 virus prevention procedures and responsibilities, which have been developed in accordance with federal and provincial public health recommendations and IUOE Local 955’s best practices. As such, these procedures may change as the pandemic evolves.

Definition of “physical distancing”:

Physical distancing is identified as individuals maintaining a physical separation of 2 meters distance.

Facility Prevention Procedures:

  1. Soap dispensers in facility washrooms will have hands-free operation.
  2. Hands sanitizer dispensers will be located within the facility in high traffic areas.
  3. All classroom desks and tables will be spaced according to physical distancing protocol.
  4. All training classrooms, equipment cabs and high traffic areas will be cleaned and sanitized daily by a designated staff member.
  5. COVID-19 information posters will be predominately displayed in all washrooms, classrooms, and common areas. These posters will outline recommended hand washing, physical distancing and other virus prevention information.

Pre-enrollment Procedures:

  1. All students will be pre-screened by completing a COVID-19 Risk Exposure Declaration when they are confirmed to attend a course. (Prior to attending training).
  2. All Apprenticeship & Education staff will be pre-screened to ensure they have no known exposure or symptoms of COVID-19.

During Enrollment Procedures:

  1. The BCAEC gate will remain closed. A clearly visible sign will direct visitors to call the office to gain entry. Each visitor will be asked if they show any COVID-19 virus symptoms. If the visitor indicates any COVID-19 symptoms, they will be refused entry to the property until medically cleared.
  2. Students must complete the COVID-19 Risk Exposure Declaration document during orientation.
  3. Students will be assigned a personal desk or table and that will be their permanent seating for the duration of the course.
  4. Students must participate in a revised orientation presentation that consists of the following COVID-19 information:
    1. COVID-19 symptoms and awareness.
    2. What to do if a student recognizes any personal COVID-19 symptoms.
    3. Personal handwashing and sanitation procedures.
  5. Students will not share their writing instruments and documents with another person.
  6. Students must remove all items from their personal desk/table at the end of each day.
  7. Sanitizing classroom desks/tables, computers, and equipment cabs at the end of each school day will be done by a designated staff member.
  8. The kitchen microwaves and refrigerator may be utilized.
  9. No self-serve coffee or other related kitchen items (cups, plates and cutlery) will be offered at this time.
  10. Sanitizing of washrooms will be done daily by a designated staff member.
  11. Whenever possible, staff will provide masks and disposable gloves upon student request.
  12. The use of masks and gloves is mandatory when students are inside of equipment cabs.
  13. Students will be routinely engaged by staff to ensure the proper COVID-19 virus prevention procedures are being maintained.
  14. Students will not be allowed to travel in training support vehicles.
  15. Staff will ensure physical distancing will be maintained when students are involved with practical lessons.

Post Enrollment Procedures:

During the course evaluation, a BCAEC Instructor will follow-up with each student to identify if the Apprenticeship and Education staff ensured the proper COVID-19 Virus Prevention Procedures were followed to the best of their abilities.

Student Responsibilities:

  1. Follow all procedures described in the BCAEC COVID-19 Virus Prevention Training Procedures.
  2. Complete the Apprenticeship and Education COVID-19 Risk Exposure Declaration both verbally when confirmed for training and in writing during course orientation.
  3. If a student begins to experience symptoms they must isolate at home, notify the Apprenticeship & Education office and A.H.S.
  4. Practice physical distancing as described in the Apprenticeship and Education COVID-19 Virus Prevention Training Procedures.
  5. Wear a mask and disposable gloves when inside an equipment cab.
  6. Bring a thermos, water container and any preferred personal sanitization items such as preferred hand soap, disinfectant wipes, face mask, and disposable gloves.
  7. Clean personal spaces. This will include all desk/table and equipment that was used by the student during class. The BCAEC Instructors will provide cleaning and sanitization supplies.
  8. In the event a student has previously contracted the COVID-19 virus, a professional medical note will be required to clear the student to enter the Budd Coutts Apprenticeship and Education Centre.

Staff Responsibilities:

  1. Follow all procedures described in the Apprenticeship and Education COVID-19 Virus Prevention Training Procedures.
  2. If an instructor begins to experience symptoms they must isolate at home, notify the Administrator or the Chief Instructor and A.H.S.
  3. Practice physical distancing as described in the Apprenticeship and Education COVID-19 Virus Prevention Training Procedures.
  4. Maintain strict confidentiality of any student who has previously contracted the COVID-19 virus.

Response to Illness:

All staff and students that have attended training within a 14 day time frame of a “positive” case will be contacted and told to complete the A.H.S. COVID-19 self-assessment and contact 811 for a screening appointment if required.
